South African broadband numbers
The latest South African broadband numbers show that Vodacom and MTN dominate the South African broadband market, while Telkom continues to show steady growth.
MTN recently revealed that they have 1.4 million dongles and other data devices (such as HSPA routers) in the South African market.
Vodacom currently has 1.7 million data dongles and ‘other devices’ on their network and 5 million 3G smartphones. These users form part of Vodacom’s 13.5 million Internet users.
Vodacom previously announced that they have 1.1 million data dongles on its network, but this figure did not include other fixed data devices.
Telkom, in comparison, had 795,419 ADSL subscribers in September 2011 – far less than the mobile operators.
Other operators which make a significant continuation to South Africa’s broadband landscape include Cell C, iBurst, Neotel, 8ta and various smaller Wi-Fi operators.
