South Africa’s average broadband download speed is 3.21Mbps, up from around 3Mbps in March 2012. Despite the increase, local broadband speeds are still far behind international standards.
According to the Net Index website, which uses data from millions of recent test results from Speedtest.net, the average global download speed is 10.44Mbps, while the average upload speed is 3.88Mbps.
This global broadband average is boosted by countries such as Luxembourg, Hong Kong, and Andorra, which all have average downlink speeds higher than 30Mbps.

- Singapore – 28.71 Mbps
- Taiwan – 28.09 Mbps
- South Korea – 27.00 Mbps
- Latvia – 26.98 Mbps
- Macau – 26.97 Mbps
- Romania – 26.25 Mbps
Net Index ranks South Africa at number 109 when it comes to download speed, well below countries such as Angola, Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia.
When it comes to upload speed, South Africa, with an average speed of 1.26Mbps, is also well behind the global average of 3.88Mbps.
