40Mbps broadband pre-order from Telkom
Telkom has launched an online lead generation system (available here) offering broadband speeds of up to 40Mbps. Users are encouraged to complete a form with their preferences and will then be contacted “if a product is available”.
The lead generation page offers residential customers broadband speeds of 384kbps, 1Mbps, 4/10Mbps, 20Mbps and 40Mbps. Business customers have the same options.
Telkom is currently involved in a country-wide network upgrade, which includes the deployment of 3,700 multi-service access nodes (MSANs).
The new MSANs will allow Telkom to roll out ADSL2+, VDSL2, and fibre-to-the-premises to customers within the trial areas.
This network upgrade will support Telkom’s plans to increase the speed of its entry-level ADSL service to 2Mbps by 2015, and at the same time boost its highest ADSL speed to 40Mbps.
While Telkom’s 40Mbps DSL offering is not commercially available yet, the company has embarked on a pilot project for its new high speed broadband offerings in selected areas.
Telkom’s first MSANs are already live, serving well over a thousand of Telkom’s fixed line broadband subscribers. Over the next few months thousands more of Telkom’s ADSL customers will be migrated to this new high speed broadband network.
It is currently not clear when the 40Mbps broadband service from Telkom will become available.
A Telkom spokesperson told MyBroadband that the company would make an announcement regarding the availability of 20Mbps and 40Mbps “when it is appropriate to do so”. Users that fill in the form will be contacted when the high-speed DSL services become available in their area, Telkom said.
