20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL: ISPs respond

Telkom 40Mbps

Telkom is planning to launch its 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL services on 4 March 2013, and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are getting ready to launch uncapped services to complement the higher speeds.

The retail price for the new 20Mbps VDSL service is expected to be around R470, with the 40Mbps service expected to be in the region of R650.

MWEB ISP CEO Derek Hershaw said that they will offer 20Mbps and 40Mbps services with uncapped accounts, but will only be able to provide pricing details at a later stage.

“We’ve only really had one month of full usage so far, so we’ll need to run it a bit longer to get a better idea of what the real performance is and then how to price it,” said Hershaw.

Web Africa COO Rupert Bryant said that they will “definitely offer both the 20Mbps and 40Mbps products, and will also be doing 20Mbps and 40Mbps uncapped services.” Bryant could not yet give pricing guidelines.

Axxess marketing director Franco Barbalich said that they are excited to be able to offer higher ADSL speeds to clients.

“We will be offering both the 20Mbps and 40Mbps ADSL accounts and lines when the service becomes available in March,” said Barbalich.

Afrihost director Greg Payne said that they will be offering VDSL to their clients and are in the process of developing the various offerings.

“We don’t have any specific information to give out at the moment, but will do so as soon as the products are defined,” said Payne.

Cybersmart CEO Laurie Fialkov said that their initial 20Mbps and 40Mbps uncapped products are likely to be aimed at the business market, with higher service levels. However, this will require a network change from Cybersmart.

Cybersmart is currently busy with upgrading its network, which includes splitting it into three regions – Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban.

“There won’t be many exchanges ready for the new line speeds yet, but we will offer where and when Telkom can deliver,” said Timcke.
