MTN 2GB for R99 data promotion

MTN LTE

MTN announced at a press event today (28 February 2013) that it has reduced the price of its 2GB data contract promotion and will introduce a 1GB/month promotion for customers that need less data from 1 March 2013.

The details of these new 24 month contracts are as follows:

  • 2GB x 24 (SIM only): R99/month
  • 2GB x 24 (including dongle): R119/month
  • 1GB x 24 (SIM only): R69/month
  • 1GB x 24 (including dongle): R79/month

Although both deals are billed as “promotional”, MTN highlighted the fact that its previous 2GB contract promotion was in the market for around 17 months before being replaced by this new deal.

“We don’t want to fix ourselves to a price that might not be relevant in the short term,” said head of consumer marketing at MTN SA, Mapula Bodibe, when questioned about why the didn’t launch the deals as normal contracts.

According to Bodibe, launching them as promotions leaves them the flexibility to address customer needs as they change.

In addition to the 1GB and 2GB data specials, MTN announced plans to introduce 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB data deals in the near future.

Bodibe said that they are trying to align these with their new LTE device launches towards the end of March and beginning of April.

While they couldn’t confirm pricing details, Bodibe said that the packages would be tiered appropriately to fit in with its 1GB and 2GB deals.
