Good news for Telkom’s 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL

Telkom broadband

Telkom launched its new 20Mbps and 40Mbps high speed broadband services in March 2013, and is now growing its VDSL network to support many more areas.

When Telkom launched its commercial VDSL products this month only a small group of customers in Benmore Gardens, Fourways and Waterkloof in Gauteng, Durban North in KwaZulu-Natal and Durbanville in the Western Cape could get the service.

Telkom has announced that its 20Mbps and 40Mbps broadband coverage will increase with its national rollout plans, and initial indications suggest that it is happening at a relatively fast pace.

According to information received by MyBroadband, Telkom is set to complete around 50 MSAN installations in March. This pace will continue with new MSANs being commissioned almost daily.

This rate is commendable considering that the rollout of the new MSAN network involves replacing existing street distribution cabinets (SDCs) with MSANs and putting down fibre to every MSAN to shorten the copper loop length.

To support its VDSL network rollout and select the areas with the highest demand, Telkom has launched an “interactive Interest and Demand Register application”.

“The Interest and Demand Register application will guide the national 20Mbps and 40Mbps rollout by validating the current rollout plan and, where applicable, influencing the priorities of the plan to accommodate customer needs,” said Telkom.

MyBroadband has previously received the following areas which are earmarked for VDSL upgrades over the next 12-15 months. It should be noted that there are multiple MSANs planned per area.
