Vodacom mobile data: lower prices and strong growth
Vodacom has grown its South African mobile data user base to 14.4 million (up 18.1% year-on-year) on the back of an increased demand for mobile data, aggressively priced data promotions and increased smartphone and tablet use. This is according to Vodacom’s preliminary results for the year ended 31 March 2013.
Vodacom increased the number of active smartphones on its network to 6 million, an increase of 1.2 million year-on-year. The average monthly smartphone data usage increased 43.4% to 139MB.
Vodacom grew its mobile data revenue to R8.882 billion, up from the previous financial year’s R7.639 billion.
The operator highlighted that data traffic grew 39.5%, which more than offset a 17.9% reduction in the average effective price per megabyte (MB).
Data is widely seen as a core component of the mobile operator’s future growth, and Vodacom seems to be on track to keep its lead in South Africa in the broadband market.
