The true price of data from Vodacom

Vodacom has revealed that the average effective price for mobile data on its network is between 30c and 40c per MB – down from 40c to 50c per MB six months ago.
Speaking to Moneyweb’s Hilton Tarrant, Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub said that there was a 17.9% reduction in the average effective price per megabyte (MB) over the last year.
“The price for data ranges from as little as 1c or 2c per MB right up to R1.00 or R1.50 per MB, depending on whether it is ad-hoc usage or within a tariff plan,” said Joosub.
Over the last six months Vodacom unveiled many aggressively priced data promotions, with the lowest ever 1GB, 2GB and 3GB data bundle prices.
In November 2012 Joosub said that most Vodacom customers on data bundles are paying as little as 5c or 6c per megabyte. “The effective price per megabyte is in the 40s now and dropping,” he said.
Big increase in data use
Vodacom said that data traffic grew 39.5% over the last year, offsetting the reduction in the average effective price per megabyte (MB).
Joosub said that the average data usage is up 30% on smartphones to 139 megabytes per customer. On tablets it’s up 45% to 594 megabytes per customer.
Vodacom grew its mobile data revenue to R8.882 billion, up from the previous financial year’s R7.639 billion.
