Telkom 40Mbps VDSL vs NeoBroadband 40Mbps fibre

Telkom Neotel battle

Telkom launched its 40Mbps VDSL products in selected areas of Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban in March 2013. Not to be outdone, Neotel-linked 40Mbps fibre products in Johannesburg are offering even better value.

Telkom’s 40Mbps VDSL product is using existing copper infrastructure as a last mile technology, but with an upgraded MSAN network and shorter local loop lengths.

A 40Mbps NeoBroadband product, which is currently available in Maboneng in Johannesburg and provided through a partnership between Neotel and Maboneng, is using fibre to the home (FTTH) as a last mile access technology.

It is understood that the last mile infrastructure is operated by Maboneng, while Neotel is providing the backhaul infrastructure and data for the service.

What gives the fibre to the home product an advantage is that it is scalable up to 1Gbps, and it can offer DStv services over the same connection.
