Telkom ADSL: good news

Today (14 June 2013), Telkom released its annual results for the year ended 31 March 2013, revealing that its ADSL subscriber base grew to 870,505 at the end of the reporting period, up 5.2% from 827,091 in March 2012.

This continued growth may be of some consolation to Telkom as the company is struggling to hold on to fixed line customers.

In recent years the monthly growth of ADSL subscribers slowed significantly when compared to the “ADSL boom” in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, Telkom grew its ADSL numbers at around 13,000 new subscribers per month. In recent years the growth slowed to as little as 2,457 new subscribers per month.

The good news is that Telkom has reversed the slowing ADSL growth seen over the past few years. The latest monthly growth figures has risen to 4,779 per month.

This stronger growth can partly be attributed to higher ADSL speeds, better overall value and an effective marketing campaign.

Telkom still has a strong broadband position

Telkom remains in a strong position to provide quality broadband products in South Africa.

Telkom is the only national provider of affordable fixed line broadband access in the country, and its new 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL products have already created strong demand from consumers and businesses.
