Latest Telkom 20Mbps, 40Mbps VDSL areas
Telkom recently announced that it has commissioned over 240 Multi Service Access Node (MSAN) units, with the number of active VDSL ports sitting at around 200,000.
What is particularly encouraging is that the company has grown the number of customers on VDSL ports to over 120,000. This means that these customers should be able to subscribe to Telkom’s 20Mbps and 40Mbps services.
The uptake of Telkom’s 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL services has, however, been slow. According to information received by MyBroadband, Telkom currently only has a few hundred VDSL subscribers.
The reason is not only coverage, but also the costs associated with the service.
The monthly cost of an uncapped 20Mbps or 40Mbps VDSL service is significantly more than a 4Mbps or 10Mbps ADSL option.
New VDSL subscribers must also purchase a VDSL router, which creates another barrier of entry.
Despite these obstacles there are many residential broadband users and businesses which are keen to spend extra money for faster broadband speeds.
