Telkom VDSL roll-out update

There are around 167,000 active ports in some 200 locations on Telkom’s “new generation” network, a spokesperson for the company recently told MyBroadband.

This seems to suggest that although Telkom hasn’t expanded much beyond the 240 multi service access nodes (MSANs) it said it had in June, 42,360 active ports have been added in the last 2–3 months.

In a press release issued in June 2013, Telkom’s former managing director of wholesale and networks, Bashier Sallie, said that 53 MSANs were ready to be rolled out in the near future along with four exchanges that represent some 175 MSANs.

Sallie has since resigned, four days after Telkom’s head of regulator affairs Andrew Barendse announced his resignation.

Asked about the status of the MSAN project and whether Telkom still planned to commission these MSANs shortly, the company said that its MSAN roll-out program is on track.

“Telkom is rolling out according to a deployment plan,” a spokesperson told MyBroadband. “Customers can check on Telkom’s Interest Register where the services are available and where they will be available in the near future.”

The Telkom VDSL interest register is available on the Telkom Wholesale website.
