Another R374-million for broadband in SA schools

The National Treasury has earmarked an additional R374-million for the school broadband project run by the Department of Communications (DoC).

In the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement published on Wednesday, 23 October 2013, Treasury explained that the Adjustments Appropriation Bill and the Division of Revenue Amendment Bill set out amendments in the current financial year.

“These reflect in-year changes to allocations made possible by re-prioritisation within the existing expenditure envelope,” Treasury said.

The additional amount for the DoC’s school broadband project is among the changes listed.

In its vote for the 2012 national budget, the DoC’ stated that its stated goal for the project was to connect 1,650 schools by March 2013.
