MWEB free Fon WiFi at 2,000 hotspots in SA

Mweb announced in a press statement on Wednesday, 29 January 2014, that over 2,000 Fon Wi-Fi hotspots are already active in South Africa, with over 7,000 Fon routers ordered since launch.

Fon and Mweb announced their partnership on 16 January 2014, with Mweb offering new and existing subscribers a free Fon upgrade for a limited time.

The service lets subscribers share their ADSL connection with other Fon users by plugging Fon Wi-Fi equipment into their home network. In exchange you receive access to Fon’s global community of 12-million Wi-Fi users who act as a hotspot.

Fon recently announced that it aims to broaden the network to 35 million users by 2016, Mweb said.

Mweb said it has experienced overwhelming demand for its new Fon offering.

“Ten days after launching, we hit the 1,200 mark, which was an impressive milestone so soon after the launch of the product,” CEO of Mweb ISP Derek Hershsaw was quoted as saying. “Today [29 January 2014] we hit the 2,000 mark. It is indicative that South Africans are embracing this new offering,” Hershaw said.
