Ookla’s Net Index website shows that the affluent suburbs of Rivonia, Bryanston, and Sandton are the South African suburbs with the highest average broadband speeds.

The Net Index website, which uses data from millions of recent test results from Speedtest.net, shows that the average download speed in South Africa is 4.5Mbps.

South Africa’s average broadband speed is significantly lower than the global average of 16.7Mbps.

Top broadband suburbs, cities in South Africa

The top suburbs in the country, which is partly to thank for lifting the country’s average speed to over 4Mbps for the first time ever, are Rivonia, Bryanston, and Sandton.

Ookla’s Net Index statistics show that twelve areas have higher download speeds than the South African average of 4.5Mbps:

  1. Rivonia – 6.7Mbps
  2. Bryanston – 6.7Mbps
  3. Sandton – 6.7 Mbps
  4. Midrand – 6.6Mbps
  5. Randfontein – 6.1 Mbps
  6. Brits – 5.3Mbps
  7. Pretoria – 5.1Mbps
  8. Pinetown – 5.0Mbps
  9. Johannesburg – 5.0Mbps
  10. Witbank – 4.9 Mbps
  11. Randburg – 4.8 Mbps
  12. Nelspruit – 4.7Mbps

The top broadband cities according to the website are:

  1. Pretoria – 5.06Mbps
  2. Johannesburg – 4.96Mbps
  3. Cape Town – 4.35Mbps
  4. Durban – 3.57Mbps
