Multichoice has announced that DStv SuperSport will offer two 24-hour channels to cover the duration of the FIFA Football World Cup 2014.
One channel will be broadcast in high-definition (channel SS3HD) and the other in standard-definition (channel SS3). Every match will be broadcast live.
There will be four language options: English, Portuguese, Sotho and isiZulu.
For the eight matches that run concurrently, in the last-round round-robin stage, channels SS4HD and SS4 will feature these fixtures.
SuperSport’s coverage will include TV, digital, social, Catch-Up and Video-on-Demand content.
HD broadcast upgrades
SuperSport has undergone a multi-million rand refurbishment of its High Definition studio to coincide with the World Cup.
“We’ve invested heavily in the latest technology,” said Alvin Naicker, SuperSport’s head of production. “It’s a multi-faceted facility that offers a range of broadcast options. Plus we’ve revamped the adjoining studio-entertainment area that now includes a fan zone and is multi-purpose.”
SuperSport is boasting new broadcasting technology for the event coverage. The World of Champions’ presentation will include “augmented reality” says SuperSport.
“Using high-end graphics, SuperSport will take viewers into 3-D representations of all stadiums, enabling experts to analyse the game like never before. This is the first time this technology will be used on the continent,” the broadcaster claims.

SuperSport is also boasting a number of football legends and experts as part of of their broadcast team.
Manchester United superstar Ryan Giggs, former World Cup winner Marcel Desailly of France, English legend John Barnes a,nd former Spanish star Gaizka Mendieta are among the big-name football personalities who will be analysing matches for SuperSport.
They will be joined by Sammy Kuffour, Jay Jay Okocha, Shaun Bartlett, Andre Arendse, Andy Townsend, Sunday Oliseh, Neil Tovey, Ernst Middendorp, Ruud Krol, Stuart Baxter, Gavin Hunt and Doctor Khumalo.
The Maximo (Portuguese) channel headliners are Oliveira Gonçalves, former head coach of the Angolan national team, Bernardino Pedroto, winner of five national championships, and former international José Luís Vidigal.
In Brazil, SuperSport’s coverage will be anchored by popular Robert Marawa, Carol Tshabalala, Phumlani Msibi, Oliseh, Townsend and Colin Udoh.
SuperSport will have dedicated crews following Ghana, Nigeria, Portugal, and Brazil.
“Our over-arching philosophy is to convey the entire Brazil experience,” said Naicker. “We’ll be bringing Brazil to the fans, hence our payoff line ‘We are Brazil.’ And we’ll go beyond the football, bringing viewers the feel, culture and rhythms that surround the World Cup.”
