ShowMax Premium prices for South Africa revealed

ShowMax Premium will cost R99 per month and offer subscribers unlimited viewing of movies and shows in the service’s catalogue.

News of the pricing of the Netflix competitor from Naspers, which is set to launch on 19 August, comes after a details of the service leaked online through Google’s web cache.

Sources had previously told MyBroadband that Naspers was getting ready to launch a subscription video on demand service with the aim of beating Netflix to market in developing economies.

Information from cached web pages at showmax.com, which is registered to Naspers subsidiary MIH in Hong Kong, suggested that the service will be available in two tiers: free and paid-for.

ShowMax on tablet

ShowMax Basic will offer access to a limited selection of content for free, while ShowMax Premium will give subscribers access to the service’s full library.

A free 7-day trial to ShowMax Premium will be available.

Up to five different devices can be linked to a ShowMax account, and ShowMax Premium will let you stream from two devices simultaneously.

The following devices will be supported at launch:

• Web browsers on personal computers
• iPhone and iPads running iOS 7 or higher
• Android phones and tablets running Android 4.1.0 or higher
• Samsung Smart TVs (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)
• Samsung Tizen Smart TVs (2015)
• LG NetCast Smart TVs (2012, 2013, 2014)
• LG WebOS Smart TVs (2014, 2015)

Some of the content the cached pages indicated would be available on ShowMax includes:

• Arrow
• Big Bang Theory
• Castle
• Elementary
• Ray Donovan
• Vikings

Local productions such as Egoli, Binnelanders, Orkney Snork Nie, Msawa, and Ballade vir ’n Enkeling also look set to be available on ShowMax in South Africa.
