Netflix vs ShowMax – price and content comparison
Netflix recently raised the price of its Standard Plan, which offers high-definition video streaming to two different devices, from $8.99 to $9.99 per month.
The price increase will initially only apply to new subscribers in the United States, Canada, and parts of Latin America, and follows a similar price hike in Europe earlier in 2015.
Existing subscribers will get a one-year grace period before their subscriptions are increased.
The table below summarises how Netflix’s US service now compares against ShowMax, Vidi, MTN FrontRow, and OntapTV in South Africa.
While Netflix may not officially be available in South Africa, this hasn’t stopped locals from bypassing its regional restrictions and subscribing to the service.
Lawyers have warned that unblocking Netflix is probably illegal in South Africa (though not criminal) – but legalities aside, the truth is that officially-supported local services such as ShowMax compete against Netflix.
For the comparison, we only looked at Netflix US.
