ShowMax now offers downloads for offline viewing

It is now possible to download TV shows and movies from ShowMax to watch later, using its Android app.

“Many South Africans are still Internet have-nots, and have been excluded from using services like ShowMax,” said the general manager of ShowMax South Africa, John Kotsaftis.

By adding download functionality, he said ShowMax enables people to take advantage of public Wi-Fi hotspots to fill up on shows to watch later.

Another benefit of the downloading feature is that it gives subscribers a way to use data allocated for night-time usage, which is often discounted or given away free with the purchase of data bundles.

“South Africa isn’t the USA or Europe – we have our own unique needs. I’m proud that we’ve developed a home-grown solution that caters for the connectivity challenges in this country.”

Up to 25 TV shows and movies can be stored at any one point using the app on Android. Storage is also limited by the capacity of the device.

The content will be viewable for 30 days, and once you start watching an episode or movie it will be available for the next 48 hours for you to finish. The same content can be downloaded again if needed.

ShowMax is also adding the download capability to its iOS apps – due for release in 2016.
