SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng continues to grab headlines – for surviving court rulings which called for his suspension, and for making controversial decisions.
Motsoeneng’s announcement in May that the SABC would implement 90% local content across its 18 radio stations took many people by surprise.
He followed that up with an announcement that SABC 3 will start broadcasting 80% local content from 1 July.
His decision to ban the public broadcaster from showing footage of destruction of public property during protests also did not go down well with a number of editors.
Here are some of the quotes and announcements from Motsoeneng which have made him a household name in South Africa.
You have two kinds of people in this world. You have certificated people and educated people. You can have many degrees, but also in that you need brain.
I don’t believe in scientific research. I believe in practicality.
All that many educated people know how to do is to read the whole day. They don’t have time to think.
I have been thinking maybe our employees should have uniforms so that they can understand unity.
Your degrees can’t work for you. You need experience to do the work. When these people come with their degrees, they drain the same people [who are skilled but don’t have degrees].
If you always put crime on media, you report about crime… actually what you are doing you are encouraging young people to commit crime.
Some leaders are born. Like myself, I am a born leader, so you can’t take that away from me. I have been leading from a young age. From Standard 3 I was a leader, even leading my own teachers.
I am Hlaudi Motsoeneng, baby! I am in charge. I will make sure that it happens. Nobody will go against what I have put in place – this policy and those responsible for implementing directly report to me.
