DStv vs ShowMax

DStv and ShowMax

ShowMax and MultiChoice recently announced that DStv Explora owners can access the video streaming service from their decoders.

ShowMax will be added to active DStv Exploras in South Africa in a phased roll-out from 13 June, allowing DStv subscribers to “binge entire box sets” of TV series.

Subscribers will have to pay the R99 ShowMax subscription fee, and their decoders will use an Internet connection to stream media from the service. Existing ShowMax customers can login with their account details.

Why DStv and ShowMax?

MultiChoice explained its reasoning behind the addition of ShowMax to its Explora, but told MyBroadband it was not planning to bundle ShowMax and DStv subscriptions at this stage.

Customers paying for DStv via debit order, though, will be able to pay for ShowMax through their DStv account.

“DStv and ShowMax are competing services, which are part of the same group. They offer different approaches to video entertainment,” said MultiChoice.

DStv offers local and international content, as well as live sport and news, through live television and its Catch Up service.

“ShowMax offers the ability to binge-watch a complete series from the very first episode in box sets, and is usually a season behind what you see on DStv.”

The company said Game of Thrones season 1-5, for example, is available on ShowMax – whereas season 6 is currently showing on DStv.

“You see the latest season on DStv, and can catch previous seasons through ShowMax,” it said.

MultiChoice said ShowMax gives customers access to the “full history of the best TV shows”, while DStv provides fresh content and live sports and news offerings.
