EU ruling against Paramount and Sky may end geoblocking
The European Commission has accepted commitments from Paramount as legally binding under EU anti-trust rules, which The Stack reports could spell the end of geoblocking in Europe.
Paramount required Sky UK to block access to its films outside the United Kingdom and Ireland on its online pay-TV platform.
According to the commission, it was concerned that Paramount’s exclusive deal with Sky UK may hurt cross-border competition between pay-TV broadcasters and partition the EU’s single market along national borders.
Paramount has committed not to include geoblocking clauses in future licensing deals with broadcasters in the European Union.
It has also committed not to take broadcasters to court where it has existing agreements in place that require geoblocking.
