When Netflix launched in South Africa in January, it had 678 titles available locally.
In contrast, Netflix’s US catalogue had 5,659 titles.
Virtual private network provider UnoTelly highlighted that even Netflix’s largest catalogue only had a fraction of the over 14,000 titles available across all the territories Netflix serves.
Eight months on, the picture has changed.
According to video-on-demand search engine JustWatch, South Africa’s Netflix catalogue has grown to 961 titles, while the US library has shrunk to 4,382 unique movies and TV shows.
In South Africa, TV shows such as Dr. Who, Star Trek, Gilmore Girls, and Vikings were added, along with several Netflix Originals – including previously-unavailable episodes of House of Cards.
The Unofficial Netflix online Global Search uNoGS states that the overall number of titles on Netflix has declined to 13,784 titles.
