MultiChoice has announced the DStv Explora 2, an updated version of its previous Explora decoder.
The new version of the decoder will sell for R1,499 excluding installation.
New compressions technology made the Explora 2 possible, MultiChoice said and will help reduce the data charges DStv subscribers incur on Catch Up services.
DStv’s large Catch Up offering means customers record less, so MultiChoice has decided to include a smaller hard drive in the new Explora.
To make the smaller hard drive work, the Explora 2 will only allow for roughly half the user recording space as its predecessor. However despite the smaller hard drive, it new Explora have the same Catch Up and BoxOffice video on demand catalogue.
In addition to updating the decoder’s hardware, the Explora 2 will also have a new A7 remote, which features:
- Motion-sensored back-lit buttons
- Visual feedback when a button is pressed
- Low battery detection
- Use as a universal remote
- Dedicated ShowMax button
The new DStv Explora decoder will be available at retailers from the middle of October, and the old Explora will remain on sale for as long as stock remains available.
Update: Clarified that the Explora 2 will have less user recording space. Added the launch date.
