Black Friday takes down TV Licence system

SABC TV Licence

Shoppers who wanted to buy a TV this morning would have gone to checkout only to discover that their TV Licence could not be validated.

This prevented stores from selling TVs during their Black Friday sales.

“[We] can confirm that the TV Licence validation server was overwhelmed by the abnormal increase in validation requests from retailers due to the Black Friday deals which resulted in the server timing out between 07:00 and 10:30,” said the SABC.

It said it has taken steps to ensure its validation server does not go offline due to load again.

“We have upgraded the server capability to cater for the influx of validations and retailers were able to process online validations from 10:45.”

“We are monitoring the server closely to avoid any further downtime and we apologise for any inconvenience experienced.”
