SABC radio stations fined for violating municipal election rules

ICASA has issued sanctions against five SABC radio stations.

These radio stations failed to comply with the Municipal Elections Regulations during the election broadcast period, said ICASA.

Breaches include airing political advertisements right after one another and broadcasting ads in the 48 hour period leading up to the elections.

“On 17 August and 16 September 2016, the Complaints and Compliance Committee heard arguments in respect to allegations of violation of the 2016 Municipal Elections Regulations as lodged by the Broadcasting Compliance Unit of ICASA,” it said.

The sanctions are as follows:

  1. Radio Sonder Grense – R50,000 was imposed to the SABC, of which R35,000 is suspended for three years.
  2. Metro FM – R5,000 and an apology to be broadcast once a day for five consecutive days.
  3. Ligwalagwala FM – R5,000 and an apology to be broadcast once a day for five consecutive days.
  4. Ukhozi FM – R5,000 and an apology to be broadcast once a day for five consecutive days.
  5. Good Hope FM – No sanctions imposed. A mistake occurred, however, a reasonable compiler could, in the same urgent circumstances, have made the same error.
