DStv keeping an eye on UHD
UHD/4K TV support is starting to gain traction in the market and DStv is keeping a close eye on international developments as standards for ultra-high-definition broadcasting begin to emerge.
Gerdus van Eeden, CEO for Video Entertainment Technology at Naspers, said that all new technology in the consumer market goes through an adoption cycle or dies.
“3D started with much hype, pushed by the TV manufacturers in a big way, but it fizzled out and is now all but dead,” he said.
Van Eeden does not expect UHD/4K to go the same way as 3D TVs, which are disappearing from store shelves across the world.
However, until standards are clear and consumers can buy TVs with confidence knowing that, for example, all forms of HDR are supported, the technology will be classed as “emerging”.
Being an emerging technology, it would be too early for MultiChoice to introduce a UHD/4K broadcast service.
“We will keep an eye on international developments as standards for UHD/4K broadcasting begin to emerge.”
“Based on these developments, we will decide whether it makes sense to offer this to our customers.”
He said MultiChoice’s current focus is expanding its HD offering, which they believe offers good-quality viewing to customers.
“Many South Africans, and DStv customers, still don’t have HD viewing in their homes. This is why we now offer HD on all our packages,” he said.
