South Africans are spoilt by SuperSport

Discover Digital has launched its video streaming service DEOD, offering live streaming, on-demand video, and movie rentals through a single platform.

At the end of his launch presentation, Discover Digital MD Stephen Watson said he had a message for Naspers chairman Koos Bekker.

“I have the utmost respect for what you’ve achieved,” said Watson.

He said South Africans are truly spoilt with the quality and variety of content available through SuperSport on DStv.

“I’ve seen what those rights cost. If you compare SuperSport to the sports offerings of broadcasters around the world, you will see [that it is a high-quality service].”

“There is room for other players on the playground. I am not a threat,” said Watson.

DEOD will not play in SuperSport’s space – it is only trying to offer niche sports exposure in South Africa.

“So play fair, don’t be a bully,” said Watson.

“My whole life has been David versus Goliath. So my message is this: Make space for smaller players and play fair.”
