Following an announcement that it wants to charge South Africans a TV Licence fee for additional viewing devices, the SABC has stated that DStv must collect licence fees on its behalf.
According to a report by Channel24, SABC acting CEO James Aguma told parliament that DStv should be compelled to collect TV Licence fees on behalf of the public broadcaster.
Aguma also wants SABC News to be sponsored, which is currently not allowed due to the possibility of “commercial influence”.
The SABC head said the Broadcasting Act must be changed to allow the broadcaster to increase its revenue from licence fees, following a massive loss in the previous financial year.
“We want to find inventive ways of collecting SABC TV Licence revenues, one of which is changing the Broadcasting Act to assist us in that regard,” said Aguma.
