Naspers announced in late June 2011 that MultiChoice is getting ready to launch their DStv Video on Demand service, also known as DStv BoxOffice.
The new DStv BoxOffice service will allow users to pay for access to movies which will automatically be downloaded to their PVRs.
MultiChoice will use their standard satellite bandwidth to push movies to DStv subscribers’ PVRs – essentially bypassing the need for fast and affordable broadband connectivity to make the service work.
New terms and conditions for MultiChoice’s DStv service revealed that DStv BoxOffice will allow subscribers to rent movies for a period and price yet to be announced, and watch them as many times as they wish during that period.
According to an invitation received late this afternoon, a launch event for DStv BoxOffice will be held on the evening of 21 July 2011.
Well known TV and entertainment blogger Thinus Ferreira reported that the service will be launched on 22 July. He also reported that subscribers will be able to pay for watching movies through their DStv BoxOffice account or credit card.
MultiChoice declined to comment on questions about the service, saying that details will be shared at the launch.
