Movie ticket prices in South Africa – Ster-Kinekor vs Nu Metro

Going out to a cinema to watch a movie is not cheap, but it can offer a unique experience in addition to instant access to the latest movies.

There are a variety of cinema types available from both Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro, which include Prestige lounge cinemas and 4D experiences, along with standard 2D and 3D movies.

Prices for these cinemas vary, and both Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro periodically adjust their pricing across the board to account for inflation and other factors.

Different cinemas across the country also feature different pricing and can be organised into rough tiers.

Ster-Kinekor historically used the “Classic” and “Junction” labels to differentiate between its cinema pricing tiers, but it has halted this practice – although signs bearing these terms may still be seen outside some malls in South Africa.

Nu Metro also offers different pricing based on undefined cinema tiers, meaning you could find a standard 2D movie ticket much cheaper at one cinema than another.

Ster-Kinekor vs Nu Metro

We compared pricing information from various Nu Metro and Ster-Kinekor cinemas around South Africa to provide a current overview of movie ticket pricing in the country.

Across almost all cinema types and screenings, Ster-Kinekor was slightly more expensive than Nu Metro.

The most common comparison relevant to regular movie-goers would be the Standard 2D and Standard 3D tickets, which are the most common screening types across urban malls.

It should be noted that mid-tier and cheaper tickets may vary depending on the cinema in questions.
