TopTV PVR launch at least a year away

The wait for TopTV’s personal video recorder (PVR) decoder will be extended by at least another 12 months, according to TopTV CEO Vino Govender.

Earlier this year (January 2011) TopTV said that it planned to have its PVR out during 2011, along with a sports channel by Q3 2011. HD channels were set to arrive by early 2012.

These plans were later revised, and TopTV said that it wouldn’t be able to launch its PVR or HD channels in 2011.

Govender explained that they are busy evaluating their options for implementing new technologies, which includes HD PVR, through a tender (or “request for bid”) process.

He explained that the soonest TopTV’s PVR would launch is the end of next year (2012) because they are still “in the development phase”.

TopTV would also only be able to consider the possibility of video on demand once they’ve made the necessary decisions about which technologies they would use, Govender said.
