Amazon Prime Video gets rand support — new prices for South Africa
Amazon has started informing its Prime Video subscribers in South Africa that they will now be billed in rand instead of euro, at R79 per month.
“This change happens automatically this month… and there’s nothing you need to do,” the company stated.
Curiously, South Africans were not initially quoted in euro, but in dollar.
When Prime Video first launched in South Africa at the end of 2016, you could get the service for $2.99 (R40–R48) per month for the first six months.
After that, it was $5.99 (R80–R95) per month.
The new rand-denominated price is therefore slightly cheaper than Prime Video subscribers in South Africa have been paying — except for a brief period between the end of 2017 and the first half of 2018 when the rand was below R13 per dollar.
Amazon said that there would be no changes to the service South Africans receive with Prime Video.
“You’ll have continued access to the same Prime Video content and Twitch Prime benefits as you do now,” it stated.
This includes unlimited streaming of Amazon Original series and popular movies with Prime Video, and free games and in-game loot every month from Twitch Prime.
Amazon’s announcement of a rand-denominated price for Prime Video comes as the adaptation of Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time launches on the platform.
Amazon Studios produced it together with Sony Pictures Television.
The first three episodes of the first season launched on Friday, with a new episode set to air every Friday until the end of the year.
Season one will have eight episodes in total.
Amazon renewed the show for a second season in May — months before the premiere.
The third season has reportedly been confirmed before shooting on the second was finished.
