DStv adds new channel for all subscribers
DStv launched a new channel — NWTV — to its catalogue on Thursday, 30 November 2023, available on channel 266.
The channel will include content specific to the North West province and other notable coverage from Southern Africa.
NWTV is available on all DStv packages — Premium, Compact+, Compact, Family, Access and EasyView — and offers a range of family-friendly programming.
“We happily welcome NWTV on our platform as it speaks to our continued effort to strengthen the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of our country,” said Georginah Machiridza, executive head of general entertainment channels at MultiChoice Group.
“It’s a tribute to the vibrant culture and remarkable stories of the region, yet it extends its appeal to the Republic of South Africa and Southern Africa, touching hearts with its stories and narratives.”
MultiChoice says NWTV will feature inspiring content to educate and entertain viewers and celebrate South African heroes.
NWTV is the second new channel DStv has added to its catalogue in 2023.
On 6 November 2023, the broadcaster added Play Room, a kids’ channel that offers local South African education and entertainment programming and popular international comment.
Available on channel 300, Play Room’s morning programming focuses on educational content aimed at four- to six-year-olds, while afternoon broadcasts will feature live action and a local live show with “high entertainment value for tweens”.
The channel is available to DStv subscribers on the R129 per month Access package and higher subscriptions.
Although not a new channel, DStv added ESPN 1 to the DStv Access package on 1 December 2023. It was previously only available on the R449-a-month Compact package or higher.
“We continue to monitor viewership trends and are thrilled to be adding ESPN 1 for our DStv Access customers,” said Marc Jury, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa.
“This announcement is our way of rewarding our loyal customers with a wider catalogue of entertaining content to choose from.”
Eight months earlier, DStv added ESPN 2 to its Compact package, bringing the sports channel offering for these customers to ten.
ESPN 2 is the home of basketball and American football in South Africa, and it broadcasts National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Football League (NFL) content.
“[DStv Compact subscribers will] be able to watch, among others, the nail-biting NBA playoffs and soon, the highly-anticipated NFL draft,” said DStv.
ESPN 2 went live for DStv Compact subscribers on channel 219 on 6 April 2023.
