DStv scores in injury time — secures AFCON rights at last minute

MultiChoice announced late on Wednesday night that SuperSport will broadcast all 52 matches of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 (AFCON) live.

This comes after the broadcaster confirmed last week that it had failed to secure the rights and would not show the tournament.

At the same time, the SABC issued a statement saying it had obtained the rights to AFCON and would show matches on SABC 1, SABC 3, SABC Sport, and provide commentary on several of its radio stations.

MultiChoice said it had subsequently reached a commercially viable agreement with rightsholders New World TV (NWTV) to broadcast the 34th edition of Africa’s premier men’s football competition from Ivory Coast.

“We are delighted to be able to showcase the best of African football live to our viewers,” said SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha.

“By securing the rights to CAN 2023 under the leadership of Dr Patrice Motsepe, SuperSport and NWTV prove that nothing is more important than the happiness of Africans who wish to follow the exploits of their favourite team during the biggest football competition in Africa,” said NWTV managing director Nimonka Kolani.

SuperSport will show the matches on DStv and GOtv across Africa.

The tournament begins on 13 January 2024 and will continue until 11 February 2024.
