Most-watched TV shows and movies on DStv Stream

MultiChoice-owned DStv has revealed that Yellowstone and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were the most-watched series and movie on the DStv Stream platform in 2024.

Over the year, DStv Stream viewers consumed more than 560 petabytes, or 560 million gigabytes, of live content on the DStv Stream app, equivalent to more than 430 million hours watched.

“The most-watched movie by unique viewers on DStv Stream was Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, starring Jason Momoa,” said MultiChoice.

“The most-watched international series was, unsurprisingly, Yellowstone, whose fans tuned in for the first new episodes in two years, as the much-anticipated second half of Season 5 recently aired.”

It added that the most watched local series on the platform in 2024 was Maznsi Magic’s My Brother’s Keeper, which it notes was nominated for four South African Film and Television awards.

These included the Most Popular TV Soap or Telenova award.

“The most-streamed live-sports event on DStv Stream in 2024 was the South Africa versus Scotland international rugby match on 10 November 2024 at Murrayfield, where the world champions beat a spirited Scotland 32-15,” said MultiChoice.

The streaming platform has performed well in 2024, with MultiChoice reporting a 71% year-on-year revenue increase for DStv Stream in September 2024.

The broadcaster also rolled out various platform enhancements in 2024.

“We’ve put in the work this year to make DStv Stream better than ever,” says DStv Stream executive head Daniel Courtenay.

“With a fresh interface and smarter recommendations, our viewers are loving the freedom to catch live TV or binge their favourite boxsets whenever it suits them — just in time for the festive season.”

“We really encourage DStv subscribers to download the app and take advantage of the upgraded experience — completely free with their monthly subscription,” he added.

The enhancements include an updated user interface, which hit the platform in August 2024, followed shortly after by Cloud PVR recordings and “Watch from Start” functionality.

The Watch from Start feature lets viewers rewind live channels, including SuperSport, M-Net, Mzansi Magic, and kykNet, for up to 24 hours to catch up on programming they’ve missed.

“DStv subscribers, who can access the service for free, can now enjoy a PVR experience without the cost of purchasing a PVR decoder,” added MultiChoice.

The final season of Yellowstone premiered on DStv on 18 November 2024

Lots to look forward to this December

MultiChoice also highlighted a range of new and exclusive content that will be available on DStv this December, including dark-comedy drama Sweetpea on 12 December and historical drama A Very Royal Scandal on 23 December.

The latter is based on Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis’ interview with Prince Andrew.

Die Klubhuis is a docuseries about passionate rugby fans, starting 13 December, while Guy Fieri hosts a culinary showdown between 32 of the world’s top chefs in Tournament of Champions, from 17 December,” added MultiChoice

Sportsfans also won’t be left wanting.

MultiChoice said more than 500 live soccer matches will be broadcast between 1 December 2024 and the end of January 2025.

“This period coincides with the Premier League’s incredible spell of 90 matches in 45 days from 23 November 24 to 6 January 2025,” says MultiChoice.

“Add to that the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup, plus Pakistan’s cricket tour to SA, and there’s an array of unbeatable sporting action to feast on this festive season.”
