Christmas movies you can stream for free in South Africa

Streaming services eVOD and Plex offer a range of Christmas and other movies that South Africans and visitors to the country can watch for free this festive season.

These include classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, Scrooge, and newer titles such as Our First Christmas and The Twelve Days of Christmas Eve.

MyBroadband looked for Christmas movies available to stream for free in South Africa and found 11 options. However, several of which we hadn’t heard of.

While 11 free streaming services are currently available in the country, most only offer access to select live TV channels, while Plex and eVOD offer a range of on-demand movies and TV shows.

This means that viewers won’t need to check TV guides to ensure they don’t miss certain movies, as the titles listed are all on-demand.

Accessing them requires only an active Internet connection and a device capable of accessing it. These include Android and iOS devices, select smart TV platforms and web browsers.

Plex offers on-demand streaming of available titles in up to 1080p resolution, while eVOD’s resolution maxes out at 720p.

According to Netflix, streaming a 1080p title will require an Internet connection speed of 5Mbps or higher. This shouldn’t be a problem for many, as even entry-level fibre packages offer higher speeds.

Those watching eMedia’s eVOD platform at 720p resolution will require an Internet speed of 3Mbps or higher.

Listed below are 10 Christmas movies you can stream for free in South Africa. We have indicated each title’s respective Rotten Tomato audience score in brackets.

These include popular classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, the 1951 and 1984 productions of A Christmas Carol, and Scrooge.

It’s a Wonderful Life — Plex (95%)

A holiday classic… When frustrated businessman George Bailey (James Stewart) becomes suicidal, an angel from heaven, Clarence (Henry Travers), visits him. To change his mindset, Clarence shows him what life would have been like without his existence.

A Christmas Carol (1951) — Plex (89%)

Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim), a bad-tempered, miserable businessman, makes it clear that he has no time for sentimentality and largely views Christmas as a waste of time. In this Christmas classic, he is visited by three spirits who show him the errors of his ways.

Albert Finney plays Ebenezer Scrooge, a wealthy but miserable man who is in for a shock on Christmas Even when he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley (played by Alec Guinness), who informs him that the Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present are going to visit him.

A Christmas Carol (1984) — Plex (75%)

Ebenezer Scrooge (played by George C. Scott), a spiteful and miserly man, encounters the Ghosts of Christmas past, present, and yet to come on Christmas Eve who show him the error of his ways.

Our First Christmas — eVOD (59%)

Following a difficult divorce, Cindy and Tom, a widower, get married. At first, the families get on well, but as Christmas approaches, tensions rise as neither family is prepared to forfeit their respective family traditions.

Silent Night, Deadly Night — Plex (50%)

A young Billy sees his parents being killed by Santa after being warned by his senile grandfather that Father Christmas punishes those who are naughty. After being orphaned and raised by two nuns, Billy grows up to be a killer Father Christmas.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Eve — Plex (38%)

A successful business executive meets a Latin American rep on Christmas Eve and neglects his family, girlfriend, and employees. He is doomed to repeat the day until he gets it right.

Jack Frost (1997) — Plex (16%)

Serial killer Jack Frost’s escort to his execution crashes, and he returns as a mutant and vengeful snowman who goes on a killing spree. Sheriff Tiler’s, who caught Jack Frost initially, fears come true as bodies start piling up.
