Largest and best TVs under R10,000 in South Africa

The largest TV South Africans can buy for less than R10,000 in May 2025 is a 75-inch model, while the best in terms of display quality use MiniLED technology.

MyBroadband recently searched the online catalogues of major TV retailers and found that R10,000 can go a long way when selecting a TV.

Large-screen TV prices have come down substantially in recent years, while more expensive technologies and features have become more accessible in the mid-range.

When MyBroadband previously looked at what was on offer at this price point in February 2024, we found several models with 4K resolution and 65-inch screens.

The largest TV was a 70-inch Skyworth model with regular LED backlighting.

Fast-forward a year and a half, and much has remained the same regarding TV sizes. However, we found many more models had newer, superior backlighting technologies.

The largest TV for under R10,000 was the 75-inch Hisense 75A6K, available for R9,999 from HiFiCorp and Incredible.

That price is available only to +More loyalty club subscribers. Membership is free.

The 75A6K boasts 4K resolution and support for 4K upscaling on lower-resolution content.

It also features Hisense’s Vidaa smart TV operating system with dual-band Wi-Fi and Apple Airplay 2 support.

While the Hisense 75A6K has sheer size as a strength, it uses regular LED backlighting, which means its colour accuracy and contrast may leave much to be desired compared to some smaller models.

We found several 65-inch sets from Hisense, Samsung, Skyworth, TCL, and Toshiba with QLED panels.

These TVs feature numerous quantum dots instead of just a few LEDs to provide backlighting to groups of pixels.

That improves colour vibrancy and accuracy and wider contrast, resulting in deeper blacks and higher brightness. They should all easily outperform the 75-inch Hisense model in display quality.

MiniLED selection below R10,000

TCL 55-inch 4K MiniLED TV with 144Hz refresh rate

We also found a handful of MiniLED models from TCL and Hisense, which offer even better display performance than QLED.

MiniLED is similar to QLED but uses smaller backlights, providing support for more local dimming zones to provide more precise control over lighting in different parts of a scene.

The TV with the best balance of size and display quality was the Hisense 65-inch U6N Pro.

This model boasts MiniLED backlighting with 240 dimming zones and a contrast ratio of 5,000:1.

For those looking for the best TV set for gaming, a model with a higher refresh rate may be ideal.

However, shoppers should be wary of TVs advertised with 120Hz “Pro Motion” or similar technologies, as these are technically not high refresh rate models.

The best TV with a high-quality display and high refresh rate for under R10,000 was the TCL C6K, another 4K TV with MiniLED backlighting.

It boasts 512 dimming zones and a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. Additional features include an Onkyo 2.1 speaker system with support for Dolby Atmos.

These use software to generate additional frames, but this can make some movies and TV shows look cheap, in what has been coined the “soap opera” effect.
