DStv adding a new channel
DStv will run a SuperSport channel dedicated to the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on its pay-TV platform in December 2025.
Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot met with CAF president Patrice Motsepe at SuperSport’s Studio 6 on Thursday, 6 November, to announce that the tournament will be broadcast on DStv in various languages.
The new owner of MultiChoice said it helped secure the CAF broadcast rights. Canal+ will show the CAF Afcon 2025, which is being hosted by Morocco, from 21 December 2025.
Regarding language options, the broadcasts will be available “in French, English, Portuguese, and indigenous languages, following SuperSport’s deal for English-speaking broadcast rights.”
“Our newly-forged merger with MultiChoice has already unlocked opportunities and benefits for our customers,” Mignot said.
“This year’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is a great demonstration of the power and potential of this common ambition: bringing together our expertise to offer unprecedented coverage.”
He added that broadcasting the competition in several languages is a strong way for Canal+ to build a closer relationship with its viewers.
“For all these reasons, our subscribers will be part of the most spectacular celebration of African football,” said Mignot.
French media giant Groupe Canal+ took control of MultiChoice on Monday, 22 September 2025, after the last suspensive conditions of its mandatory takeover were met, making its offer unconditional.
Canal+ presented an offer to acquire MultiChoice last year after exceeding the 35% shareholding threshold stipulated in the South African Companies Act.
The French media firm acquired its first 6.5% stake in MultiChoice in October 2020 and steadily increased its shareholding over several years.
Following negotiations with the MultiChoice board and a dispute with the Takeover Regulation Panel, Canal+ offered R125 per share for all stock it didn’t already own, valuing MultiChoice at R55 billion.
Good news about DStv channels

In an October 2025 interview, Mignot stated that Canal+’s library of European content was unrivalled and that DStv customers can expect a significant amount of new content to launch on the platform.
He said the firm also creates 4,000 hours of African content in up to 15 languages each year. This content will be added to MultiChoice’s approximately 6,000 hours of annual locally produced content.
“Combined, we will provide roughly 10,000 hours per year in 20 to 35 languages,” said Mignot.
“So, in a 10- to 15-year period, we are building up a catalogue of more than 100,000 to 150,000 hours, and then we will be able to make that content travel.”
He said the final result will be an extensive catalogue that is available to a larger audience through dubbing and rescripting.
While it hadn’t confirmed any new channels at the time, MultiChoice had already started introducing new content on existing channels.
DStv now offers select French Ligue 1 football matches, broadcast live on SuperSport, through its partnership with Canal+.
Ligue 1 is France’s top professional football league. It features 18 teams competing in 34 matches each over a 10-month period.
“Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches will now be available live on SuperSport to DStv, DStv Stream and GOtv subscribers across the continent,” said SuperSport.
“SuperSport will broadcast up to three Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches per weekend, bringing iconic French players such as Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué to millions of African screens.”
