SABC appoints technology chief
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced the permanent appointment of Vuyo Nyembezi as its group executive for technology, effective 15 May 2026.
The public broadcaster said Nyembezi’s appointment followed an exhaustive and competitive recruitment process.
“Nyembezi has been serving in the acting capacity of the role and has already provided steady leadership to the technology division during a critical period,” the SABC said.
“A seasoned operational technology and broadcasting engineering executive, Nyembezi brings more than 20 years of experience within the broadcasting industry and the SABC environment.”
He has held various leadership positions across the public broadcaster’s business, where he contributed to operational excellence, technology innovation, infrastructure modernisation, and strategic information.
Nyembezi holds a PhD in Business Management, an MBA, and extensive executive development qualifications in strategy, innovation, and broadcast management.
“Nyembezi has demonstrated outstanding leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the SABC during his time in the acting role,” SABC chief operating officer, Lungile Binza, said.
“His appointment is a testament to his strategic capability, institutional knowledge, and passion for building a digitally-enabled and future-focused public broadcaster.”
SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli said Nyembezi’s appointment reflected the public broadcaster’s commitment to strong leadership and becoming a digitally enabled public broadcaster.
“Please join me in congratulating Nyembezi on his appointment and wishing him every success in his new role,” Chabeli said.
Commenting on his appointment, Nyembezi said the SABC occupied an important place in South Africans’ lives and that technology would remain central to enabling the SABC to fulfil its mandate.
“I look forward to continuing to work with colleagues across the organisation as we build a digitally empowered and future-ready public broadcaster,” he said.
In the role, Nyembezi will lead the public broadcaster through the next phase of its digital transformation journey to ensure it is well-positioned for the future.
