Bigger, better DStv PVR on its way
Naspers CEO Koos Bekker said that they have a big project underway to launch a new DStv PVR with more capacity. The increased capacity, said Bekker, will help to offer more movies and TV series on-demand to DStv subscribers.
Speaking to Moneyweb, Bekker said that DStv’s BoxOffice, which allows subscribers to rent movies, is a great success. However, the platform’s growth is hampered by a lack of storage space on DStv’s PVRs.
“At the moment movie rentals run at about 400,000 per month … but the weakness is we can’t give you a thousand movies because the PVR wouldn’t allow it,” said Bekker.
“We can place the latest hits on your PVR and give you a type of video rental experience for about, at the moment, 16 to 20 movies, and hopefully we can expand it in time to 100 and maybe more.”
Bekker said that they are planning to double the DStv PVR storage capacity every 18 months, which will enable them to grow the number of movies which they can bring to their users.
Earlier this month Aletta Alberts, head of content at MultiChoice, revealed that MultiChoice expects to launch a new Internet-connected decoder during the first quarter of 2013.
Alberts explained that this new decoder will increase capacity for DStv’s “Catch Up” content from 20 hours to 175 hours.
