SABC+ reaches 3 million users

The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC’s) free streaming service, SABC+, has surpassed three million registered users.

In a statement, the broadcaster said achieving the milestone reinforced the SABC+’s position as one of the country’s leading digital streaming platforms.

“This achievement reflects the growing demand for accessible, locally relevant digital content and marks another important step in the SABC’s digital transformation journey,” it said.

The broadcaster explained that, unlike anonymous web traffic, registered SABC+ users represented a logged-in, consented audience.

It added that this enabled the platform to deliver more personalised viewing experiences while providing advertisers with access to high-quality, first-party audience data.

“SABC+ brings together live TV, radio, video-on-demand, catch-up content, and interactive digital experiences on a single platform,” the public broadcaster said.

Commenting on the achievement, SABC head of marketing for platforms and channels, Sibusiso Gumbi, said the milestone showed that millions of South Africans trusted SABC+ for quality content.

“As our audience continues to grow, so too does our ability to connect brands with engaged viewers through meaningful, data-driven advertising solutions,” Gumbi said.

The broadcaster added that SABC+ would continue to focus on expanding content, enhancing the user experience, and creating greater value for audiences, advertisers, and commercial partners.

The platform’s user growth has been impressive, considering its relaunch in July 2024 reset the user counter.

It reached one million registrations just under a year after the relaunch and hit 1.5 million registered users by October 2025.

The growth of SABC+’s registered user base appears to be accelerating, having reached 2.15 million in March 2026 and now 3 million as of 3 August 2026.

Its growth in 2026 has far exceeded expectations. The broadcaster revealed that it had reached 2.15 million registered users as of 31 March 2026, far exceeding its annual target of 1.4 million.

The SABC was presenting its performance in the fourth quarter of the 2025/26 financial year before Parliament.

“We continue to see the growth and the strengthening of the SABC+ platform,” SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli said.

“SABC+ managed to close out the quarter at 2.15 million users, which means that it exceeded its annual target by 54%.”
