Porn FTW, says Top TV
Top TV went before a public hearing called by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) today (14 March 2013) to argue its case for screening adult channels on its satellite pay TV platform.
On Digital Media (ODM), who owns Top TV, was motivating to ICASA why they should be allowed to add three adult channels to their current offering.
In a press statement issued today, Top TV said that the ODM management team was supported in their presentation by a strong legal team and high profile women’s rights activist and clinical sexologist, Marlene Wasserman, better known to South Africans as Dr Eve.
Legal advocate Steven Budlender stated that not only were ODM’s plans for its channels wholly within the law, but for ICASA not to grant approval would be unconstitutional.
Wasserman supported ODM’s case by arguing that non-violent sexual content does not lead to an increase in violence in males.
According to Wasserman, violence in men is rooted in a complex combination of social and family-related issues.
“There is no evidence whatsoever to connect the viewing of non-violent sexual images with violent behaviour,” Wasserman said. “In fact, the opposite is often the case: access to sexual material actually helps young men better understand their own sexuality, which increases their sense of belonging in society,” she said.
Top TV’s latest application differs in some ways from its original submission in 2011, the broadcaster explained.
Aside from a change in the proposed channel line-up, ODM ’s new submission offers to restrict the broadcast of the three adult entertainment channels to the so-called ‘Watershed period’ which falls between 20:00 and 05:00.
Eddie Mbalo, CEO of ODM said that this restriction will be in addition to the measures they wanted to implement previously, including an access code and an additional subscription fee to access the content.
