New DStv channels on the cards

MultiChoice recently announced that it is going to switch its high definition (HD) broadcasts from Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite (DVB-S) to the newer DVB-S2 standard on 30 June 2013, freeing up capacity which will let them launch new channels in future.
The pay TV operator played coy when asked for details about its plans for new channels.
It also did not offer a direct answer to whether the extra capacity could only be used for HD channels, or if new SD channels for non-Premium subscribers would also be possible.
“The move to DVB-S2 will create more capacity for us for future channels and services. When we are ready to launch new channels or services, we will make the necessary announcements to our customers and in the media,” MultiChoice said.
“In due course, all HD channels and related services such as BoxOffice and Catch Up will be moved to the DVB-S2 standard.”
