Free satellite TV: specs and other details

OpenView HD

OpenView HD, the upcoming subscription-free satellite TV service from Platco Digital, will broadcast its 5 HD channels in 1080p resolution, a spokesperson for the company has told MyBroadband.

This means that OpenView plans to offer its HD channels in a more bandwidth-intensive format than DStv, which uses 1080i and 720p resolutions for its HD channels.

The minimum recommended dish size for the service is 85cm. Ellies, Space TV, Switch Digital, and ABT are all confirmed suppliers of OpenView HD, Platco said.

Each supplier will offer its own decoder that conforms to a minimum base specification set by Platco.

Warranties and support will be provided through the suppliers and not by Platco itself.

The first decoders will not use smartcards, Platco said, and users will activate them by sending a USSD string from their cellphone. It will only be possible to activate a decoder from an SA number, Platco said.

Decoders must also support NDS encryption, which Platco said will be used to protect the whole OpenView bouquet.
