DStv vs new StarSat bouquet prices, channels

DSTV StarSat

On Digital Media (ODM) has announced that its rebranded pay TV satellite offering, StarSat, will soon switch away from the bouquet configuration it offered under the TopTV brand.

It will also start selling a decoder capable of receiving high definition (HD) content for R300, the pay TV satellite operator confirmed recently.

For a dish, HD decoder, and installation, StarSat will be charging R599.

This raises the question: how do StarSat’s new prices and bouquets compare to those of DStv?

Decoder & installation cost DStv StarSat
Decoder, dish installation R599 (SD) R599
Cheapest HD decoder (RRP) R1,499 R300

As one might expect, the decoder prices are very aggressive compared to those on offer from DStv operator, MultiChoice.

While there are retailers offering a DStv dish, installation voucher, and decoder for R599, the decoder and dish are the minimum required for standard definition (SD) broadcasts.

The below table ranks the bouquets on offer from the two pay TV providers by lowest price, then highest number of video channels.
