Faking the Internet with the DStv Explora
Naspers CEO Koos Bekker said that the new DStv Explora decoder manages to “fake the Internet”, making it possible for users to catch up on news or sporting events when it suits them.
“It [DStv Explora] is very good. It’s still a bit pricey, but it basically manages to fake the Internet,” Bekker told Hilton Tarrant in a Moneyweb interview.
“What I like is I got home the last couple of days, let’s say eight o’clock or whatever and then the Ashes is summarised on CatchUp in seven minutes.”
Bekker said that it feels like the internet because a full day of cricket would be summarised in a few minutes, pushed down by satellite into his PVR and waiting for him when he arrives.
“So the function of the Explora is actually to mimic elements of the Internet,” said Bekker.
The Naspers CEO said that it is important to “fake the Internet” because broadband access in South Africa is so poor that they can’t give people sport on the internet. “We simply don’t have the bandwidth,” said Bekker.
“But we can fake it a bit by putting it on satellite, loading it down into the PVR and then offering it to you as if it were the internet.”
