DStv Madiba tributes schedule

MultiChoice has announced that it will make the film Invictus available for free on its HD PVR decoder-based BoxOffice service, and screen a number of documentaries featuring Nelson Mandela.

This is in addition to the dedicated tribute channel it announced earlier today (Friday, 6 December 2013) on DStv Channel 199.

In a press statement issued recently, MultiChoice said that it would also launch a special events channel on DStv Mobile, with mobile content available on mandelatribute.mobi.

DStv is also hosting a tribute site at madiba.dstv.com where users will have the opportunity to post their own tributes.

On DStv Catch Up (DStv Premium subscribers only)

These documentaries will be available on DStv Catch Up during the course of Friday, 6 December 2013 on the Explora decoder, and DStv’s PC and iPad platforms.

  • Voice from Robben Island (Documentary – 1 hour 29 min): Robben Island has been everything from a leper colony to a nature reserve to a high-security prison for the most famous South African of all, Nelson Mandela. In this fascinating documentary we get to learn about the island’s past and how its last political inhabitants stuck together and laid the blueprint for what would finally become the new South Africa.
  • The last mile (Documentary – 30 min): A documentary about what Nelson Mandela was aiming to achieve when he came out of prison. He talks about his political policies, touches on colonial powers and African customs. This documentary will be available on DStv Catch Up on HD and SD PVRs.
  • War and Peace (Documentary – 56 min): A fast paced, triumphant, yet complex representation of the political history of South Africa from the time of the discovery of gold in 1886 up to the election of Nelson Mandela as President in 1994.
  • Mandela: Great African Series aka Projek Mandela (Documentary – 52 min): A historical documentary of life at Robben Island some of which is narrated by Nelson Mandela as he recorded his voice for Long walk to Freedom.
  • Playing the Enemy (Documentary – 54 min) Showing the real story behind the movie called Invictus. Mandela’s way of getting to know the Afrikaaner culture while in prison and using rugby to bridge the cultural gap between blacks and whites in South Africa.
