MTN SA sees big data growth, but loses subscribers

MTN has released its quarterly update for the period ended 30 September 2017.

The company said its group subscriber numbers dropped by 0.7% quarter-on-quarter to 230.2 million. This was due to lower reported subscribers in Nigeria.

It grew in other areas, however, including:

  • Active MTN Mobile Money customers increased by 10.6% to 19.8 million.
  • Voice traffic increased by 9%.
  • Data traffic grew by 125% year-on-year.
  • MTN South Africa’s organic service revenue increased by 5.2%.

MTN SA saw big growth in data and digital services revenue, which was up 21.0% and 27.7% respectively.

This was “supported by a strong prepaid performance as well as the continued recovery of the postpaid consumer segment”, said MTN.

“Subscriber numbers decreased by 1.0% to 30.9 million, impacted by a 1.3% decline in the prepaid segment. Postpaid subscriber numbers were stable.”

The network said it continued to make good progress in improving the quality and capacity of its 3G and 4G network in the quarter.
