Huge growth for Telkom Mobile

Telkom has released its results for the year ended 31 March 2025, revealing strong mobile subscriber and mobile data revenue growth.

This resulted in significant service revenue growth in Telkom’s mobile segment, growing from R19.02 billion as of 31 March 2024 to R20.97 billion as of 31 March 2025.

This represents service revenue growth of just over 10.2% year over year.

“Mobile service revenue continued to outpace reported South African mobile market growth rates and subscriber numbers demonstrated strong growth,” said Telkom Group CEO Serame Taukobong.

“Our Mobile business achieved significant milestones this year. Its robust performance translated into a 10.2% increase in mobile service revenue, fuelled by a surge in data revenue of 12.3%.”

He added that this is the second consecutive year in which Telkom observed double-digit growth for mobile data revenue.

“This growth was underpinned by a 13.4% expansion of our mobile subscriber base, primarily driven by strong growth in prepaid subscriptions,” said Taukobong.

Telkom Mobile subscribers grew from 20.44 million in March 2024 to 23.28 million in March 2025.

Most of this subscriber growth came through its prepaid mobile business, with subscriber numbers increasing 15.4% year-on-year, from 17.49 million to 20.19 million.

Postpaid subscribers grew 1.2% from 2.95 million to 2.98 million during the financial year.

“Post-paid subscriptions also showed resilience, growing average revenue per user (ARPU) by 3.1%, with a stable base of 3.0 million subscribers,” said Taukobong.

Telkom saw significant growth in mobile data subscribers at 19.5%. Mobile data subscribers increased from 12.74 million in March 2024 to 15.23 million in March 2024.

Telkom Mobile broadband data use also increased significantly during the period. These customers consumed 1,417 petabytes of data in the 2023/24 financial year.

This figure increased by 24.1% to 1,759 petabytes in the 2024/25 financial year.

“Across the board, impressive double-digit growth in mobile and fixed data traffic underscored the strength of Telkom’s core offerings,” said Taukobong.

Telkom’s capital expenditure in its mobile space increased by 7.5% from R2.6 billion as of 31 March 2024 to R2.8 billion as of 31 March 2025.
